Michelle Finds Work, Stability
Soon after the YES Street Outreach Program began in 1999, workers found “Michelle.” Drug and alcohol dependent, she was living with friends. On the nights that she couldn’t find a friend to stay with, she slept in her car. She found a job from time to time, and often used the money to rent a room for a week. Too often however, the money went for drugs and alcohol, and Michelle would spend the night alone in her car.
After building a relationship with Street Outreach Workers, Michelle became encouraged to get away from the influences and people who were keeping her homeless. She enrolled in Job Corps training in Utah where she almost completed the one-year education program.
Because of the training, she was able to get a job in Omaha. Street Outreach helped her get a Social Security card and state I.D. Although she soon got pregnant, she kept her job and maintained her health. She delivered a normal, healthy baby girl. She lived with her grandmother for a while, where she saved enough money to move into her own apartment. She now lives in an apartment and supports herself and her little girl.
