Helping Build a Stronger Future | Staff Spotlight

Every young person deserves someone in their corner. For Ashlei, that belief is at the heart of her work as a Housing Case Manager at Youth Emergency Services (YES), where she walks alongside young people as they work toward stable housing, connect with education and community resources, and build the skills and confidence they need to become self-sufficient.

Since joining YES in April, Ashlei has provided strengths-based case management to youth participating in YES’ Independent Living, Rapid Rehousing, and Aftercare programs. But for her, supporting young people is about more than connecting them with resources. It starts with building trust and creating a space where they know they are heard, understood, and valued.

“I believe every young person deserves someone they can turn to for guidance, encouragement, and support as they navigate the transition into adulthood,” Ashlei shares.

That belief shapes the way Ashlei approaches each interaction. “I strive to make every young person feel welcomed by treating them with dignity, respect, and compassion,” she says. “Many of the youth we serve have experienced significant challenges, so it’s important that they know they’re entering a space where they’re heard, understood, and valued.”

For Ashlei, that sense of belonging is an important part of helping young people move forward. By listening without judgment and recognizing the strength youth already carry, she helps them build confidence in themselves and in the futures they're working toward.

And the resilience of those young people has left a lasting impression on her.

“The resilience of the youth we serve has had the biggest impact on me,” Ashlei says. “Despite facing obstacles that many people never have to imagine, they continue showing up, working hard, and striving for a better future.”

Seeing that determination has reinforced Ashlei’s belief that homelessness is not a reflection of a young person’s effort or potential. Many of the youth she works with are going to school, working, and doing everything they can to build stable lives while facing barriers that can be incredibly difficult to overcome. With the right support, every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed.

For Ashlei, that support begins with belonging. Whether she’s helping a young person navigate housing, connect with resources, or take the next step toward independence, she wants every youth who comes through YES’ doors to know one thing: you belong here.
