From Kalisha’s Desk—July Edition

It’s BIPOC Mental Health Month—a time to recognize the unique mental health challenges faced by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, (BIPOC) while also celebrating the strength, resilience, and cultural wealth of these communities.

More than 60% of the young people we serve at Youth Emergency Services (YES) are BIPOC and face disproportionate barriers to stable housing, education, employment, and health—including mental health care. That’s why our team is deeply committed to providing services that are inclusive, affirming, and respectful toward every young person’s lived experience. Our staff works every day to build trusting mentorships with the youth we support, to listen without judgment, and to connect them with the resources they need to feel safe, seen, and valued. We recognize that mental wellness is not one-size-fits-all, and we strive to meet each young person where they are—honoring their story, their culture, and their goals for the future.

Together, let’s continue to create spaces where mental health is valued, supported, and approached with compassion and understanding—this month and every month.
