From Kalisha’s Desk—July Edition

Home is more than a roof overhead or a place to sleep. It's the feeling of being welcomed, supported, and knowing you belong.

At Youth Emergency Services, that sense of belonging is at the heart of everything we do. Every day, young people come through our doors carrying different experiences, challenges, and hopes for the future. While their journeys may look different, they all deserve the opportunity to feel safe, valued, and connected to a community that believes in them.

Sometimes creating that feeling of home looks like providing a safe place to stay. Other times it looks like sharing a meal, celebrating a milestone, offering encouragement during a difficult day, or simply being a consistent presence when life feels uncertain.

As we move forward with our Welcome Home initiative, we are reminded that what makes a home is not just a building-it is the relationships, opportunities, and sense of belonging that help young people imagine a brighter future for themselves.

This month's stories are a reflection of that. You will meet a young person who found confidence and direction through boxing and the support of caring adults. You will also hear about a volunteer whose family believes in treating every young person with the same compassion they'd hope others would show their own children.

The challenges young people face do not disappear overnight. But they become easier to navigate when there is a safe place to land, trusted adults to walk alongside them, and a community that believes they belong.

Together, we are creating more than services or housing. We are creating home. Welcome home.
