Healing Through Connection: Mental Health Awareness at YES
Healing doesn't always look like a counseling session.
Sometimes it looks like painting with friends. A game of Bingo. A shared snack. A conversation that reminds someone they're not alone.
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, YES youth recently gathered for a special event hosted by our Clinical Mental Health Practitioner, Shy. The event brought together young people, community partners, and mental health service providers for an afternoon focused on connection, creativity, and well-being.
Youth had the opportunity to participate in activities such as Mental Health Bingo, painting, and interactive conversations with local mental health organizations. They also enjoyed snacks, received feel-good merchandise, and learned about resources available to support them both now and in the future. While the atmosphere was fun and welcoming, the purpose behind the event was deeply meaningful.
“Mental health is a crucial part of everyone’s well-being,” Shy said. “I put together this event to help people understand how impactful stability and support can be.”
Many of the young people who come to YES have experienced significant challenges, including housing instability, family conflict, trauma, or periods of uncertainty. Supporting their mental health is an essential part of helping them build stability and achieve their goals.
Events like this provide more than just a break from daily stressors. They create opportunities for youth to connect with one another, explore healthy coping strategies, learn about available supports, and experience a sense of belonging.
At YES, we believe mental health matters every day—not just during Mental Health Awareness Month. Through counseling services, supportive programming, and opportunities to build community, we strive to ensure every young person knows they have a place where they are seen, supported, and valued.
Thank you to Shy, our community partners, and the mental health service providers who helped make this event possible. Together, we're creating spaces where young people can prioritize their well-being, build resilience, and take meaningful steps toward a brighter future.
