From Kalisha’s Desk—June Edition
June is a meaningful time that holds space for two powerful observances: Pride Month and Juneteenth.
Pride Month invites us to uplift the LGBTQ+ community and recognize the ongoing fight for safety, belonging, and affirmation. For LGBTQ+ youth, these values are not just ideals—they are essential to survival and self-worth. At YES, we are proud to stand beside LGBTQ+ youth with intentional, inclusive care that affirms their identities and supports their growth.
Juneteenth—now recognized as a federal holiday—commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It stands as a symbol of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of racial equity. As we reflect on this history, we also acknowledge the present-day systems that continue to disproportionately impact Black youth, as well as the urgent work still ahead.
At YES, we believe that every young person deserves to be safe and supported on their journey to self-sufficiency. Pride Month and Juneteenth are powerful reminders of the work we do every day—creating space for every story where identity is affirmed, freedom is honored, and healing can begin.
Throughout June and beyond, we celebrate identity, honor resilience, and remain committed to building a world where justice and belonging are the norm for every young person.
