Making Mental Health Matter with Shylia | Staff Spotlight

At Youth Emergency Services (YES), the journey toward healing begins with trust, compassion, and stability—something Shylia, our Clinical Mental Health Practitioner, brings to the forefront of her work every day. With a deep commitment to helping youth thrive, she counsels, coaches, and provides essential mental health support to those navigating some of life’s toughest challenges.

“I’m drawn to the YES mission because I’m committed to supporting youth in creating stability and helping them become their best selves,” Shylia shares. “As a therapist, I thrive in this environment. It’s incredibly fulfilling to help young people heal, grow, and find their path.”

Shylia’s role is especially vital as many youth experiencing homelessness also face mental health conditions—challenges that are often intensified by housing instability. Through her work, she offers a safe space for youth to be seen, heard, and supported without judgment or barriers.

“I want people to understand how impactful stability and support can be,” she says. “Mental health is a crucial part of everyone’s well-being. Every young person deserves access to compassionate care and resources to help them navigate difficult times.”

For Shylia, the most rewarding part of her role is knowing that the work she does—no matter how big or small—helps youth feel less alone and more empowered in their journey toward mental wellness. At YES, she’s not just offering care; she’s helping change lives.
