From Kalisha’s Desk—June Edition

One of the things I appreciate most about June is that it invites us to reflect on what it truly means to belong. This month, we recognize both Pride Month and Juneteenth—two observances rooted in different histories, yet connected by a shared pursuit of freedom, dignity, and the opportunity to live authentically.

Every day at YES, we meet young people who are navigating significant challenges. Some are experiencing homelessness. Others are working through family conflict, trauma, or uncertainty about what comes next. While every young person's story is unique, one thing remains true: everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and connected.

Pride Month reminds us of the importance of creating spaces where LGBTQ+ youth feel safe, affirmed, and supported. For many young people, knowing that they are accepted exactly as they are can have a profound impact on their mental health, confidence, and sense of hope for the future.

Juneteenth offers an opportunity to honor a pivotal moment in our nation's history while celebrating the resilience, strength, and contributions of Black Americans. This milestone also encourages us to continue striving toward a future where every person has equitable access to opportunity, support, and the freedom to pursue their goals.

As I reflect on both Pride and Juneteenth, I find myself thinking about the role community plays in healing and growth. Mental health doesn't exist in a vacuum. Our well-being is shaped by whether we feel welcomed, respected, and supported by those around us. When young people experience belonging, they are more likely to build resilience, seek help when they need it, and imagine possibilities for their future. When they feel isolated or excluded, the impact can be significant.

That is why the work of YES extends beyond providing shelter, housing, and support services. We are committed to creating environments where young people know they matter. Places where they can show up as themselves, build meaningful connections, and take steps toward a brighter future. I am grateful to everyone who supports YES and helps make that work possible.

Together, we are building a community where every young person is treated with dignity, supported through challenges, and empowered to thrive. This June and beyond, may we continue creating spaces where all young people feel they belong.
