From Kalisha’s Desk—September Edition
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the challenges our young people carry and the ways our team shows up to meet those challenges with compassion and strength. September is both Hunger Action Month and National Suicide Prevention Month—two observances that connect closely to the realities many youth experiencing homelessness face. When a young person is navigating instability, trauma, or isolation, even everyday challenges can feel overwhelming. Access to basic needs like food, safety, and connection can make a meaningful difference.
Hunger Action Month reminds us that food insecurity is often one of the first and most urgent barriers youth face. At YES, meals, pantry access, and nutrition support are more than services—they’re opportunities to build trust, create stability, and remind young people that their needs matter. This month is an opportunity to highlight that hunger is a community issue, and addressing it requires all of us.
We’re also proud to continue our partnership with The Kim Foundation through Chalk It Up, a community effort that uses simple messages of hope to remind people that they matter and that support is within reach. It’s a small act with a powerful message, and one that aligns beautifully with the work we do every day.
Here at YES, our team is embracing this month with intention. Our Mental Health Therapist, Shylia, has created opportunities for staff to engage—from suicide prevention trainings and awareness activities to simply taking time to rest and recharge in our Recharge Room. Supporting youth begins with supporting the people who show up for them, and I’m grateful for the culture of care our staff continues to build.
As we look ahead, October brings our biggest event of the year: Dance for a Chance. This celebration is more than a fundraiser—it helps fuel the mental health services, crisis response, and housing stability programs that can change the trajectory of a young person’s life. I hope you’ll join us, cheer on our dancers, and help us continue creating pathways to safety, stability, and self-sufficiency.
Thank you for being part of this mission. Your support, your advocacy, and your belief in our youth help shape the kind of community where young people can feel safe, supported, and empowered to move toward self-sufficiency with confidence.
